Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

Reflections Before the Service

  • Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me,
    Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
    Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
    Christ in breadth, Christ in length, Christ in height,
    Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
    Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
    Christ in every eye that sees me,
    Christ in every ear that hears me.
    I arise today through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, through belief in the
    threeness, through confession of the oneness of the Creator of creation.
    Salvation is of the Lord. Salvation is of the Lord. Salvation is of Christ.
    May your salvation, Oh Lord, be ever with us.

    — St. Patrick, (English born Roman, enslaved and carried to Ireland where he evangelized
    widely, d. 461AD) excerpt from his prayer Patrick’s Breastplate

    Above all, do not lie to yourself. A man who lies to himself, and believes his own lies,
    becomes unable to recognize truth, either in himself or in anyone else, and he ends up losing
    respect for himself and for others. When he has no respect for anyone, he can no longer love,
    and in him, he yields to his impulses, indulges in the lowest form of pleasure, and behaves in
    the end like an animal in satisfying his vices. And it all comes from lying — to others and to
    yourself.
    — Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov (1880)

The Call to Worship

  • The Call to Worship: The One-Hundred Seventh Psalm (vv 1-9)

    Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good,
    For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
    Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
    Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary
    And gathered from the lands,
    From the east and from the west,
    From the north and from the south.
    They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region;
    They did not find a way to an inhabited city.
    They were hungry and thirsty;
    Their soul fainted within them.
    Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble;
    He delivered them out of their distresses.
    He led them also by a straight way,
    To go to an inhabited city.
    Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness,
    And for His wonders to the sons of men!
    For He has satisfied the thirsty soul,
    And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.
