Bulletin 11.21.21

Shout with joy to the LORD, all the earth! Worship the LORD with gladness. Come before Him, singing with joy.

Reflections Before the Service

  • Hank worries Sarah with the supposed FBI agent coming through town in search of the plane
Sarah Mitchell: You've gotta remember how people see you. You're just a normal guy, a
    nice, sweet, normal guy.
    Hank Mitchell: They're gonna know.
Sarah Mitchell: No, they won't. Nobody would ever believe that you'd be capable of doing
    what you've done.
[Hank and Sarah discuss whether keeping the money is a crime]
Hank Mitchell: Nobody gets hurt by us keeping it. I mean, that's what, that's what makes it
a crime, doesn't it? Somebody getting hurt?
Sarah Mitchell: What makes it a crime is it's against the law. It doesn't matter if somebody
gets hurt or they don't. If you get caught then you go to jail.
Hank Mitchell: Yeah, but nobody's gonna get caught. The money is the only evidence that we've done something wrong. We sit on it; we see what happens. If somebody comes searching for it, then we just burn it and that will be that. There's no risk. We'll always be in control.
    - Bill Paxton (Hank) and Bridgette Fonda (Sarah) in A Simple Plan, the 1998 film directed by Sam Raimi

    -
Q 82 Is any person able to perfectly keep the commandments of God? A: No mere human
since the Fall is able, in this life, perfectly to keep the commandments of God, but daily
breaks them in thought, word, and deed.
Q 83 Are all transgressions of the law equally wicked? A: Some sins in themselves, and by
reason of aggravating circumstances, are more wicked in the sight of God than others.
Q 84 What does every sin deserve? A: Every sin deserves God's wrath and curse, both in this
life, and that which is to come.

    - The Westminster Shorter Catechism (1647, modernized)

The Call to Worship

  • (A psalm of thanksgiving )
Shout with joy to the LORD, all the earth!
    Worship the LORD with gladness.
Come before Him, singing with joy.
Acknowledge that the LORD is God!
He made us, and we are His.
We are His people, the sheep of His pasture.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving; go into His courts with praise.
Give thanks to Him and praise His Name.
    For the LORD is good.
    His unfailing love continues forever,
And His faithfulness continues to each generation.
