A Reflection Before the Service
-
Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at sea. We are far too easily pleased.
— C.S. Lewis, “The Weight of Glory” sermon delivered on June 8, 1941 at the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Oxford (emph. added)
In the Christ-life, nothing, nothing at all, can be purchased at the do-it-yourself shop.
— Harry Blamires, The Christian Mind (1963)
The Call to Worship
-
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, 5.11-14
Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice,
"Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing."
And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying,
"To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever."
And the four living creatures kept saying,
"Amen."
And the elders fell down and worshiped.
