Reflections Before the Service
-
[He] told people that their sins were forgiven, and never waited to consult all the other people
whom their sins had undoubtedly injured. He unhesitatingly behaved as if He was… the person
chiefly offended in all offenses.Christ says that He is ‘humble and meek’ and we believe Him; not noticing that, if He were
merely a man, humility and meekness are the very last characteristics we could attribute to
some of His sayings.A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral
teacher. He would either be a lunatic – on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg –
or else he would be the Devil of Hell… Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a
madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at
His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about
His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us.— C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, Book II, CH 3, “The Shocking Alternative”
The Call to Worship
-
The Revelation of Jesus Christ 19.11-16
Reader: I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse,
whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice He judges and makes
war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on His head are many crowns. He
has a name written on Him that no one knows but He Himself. He is dressed
in a robe dipped in blood, and His name is the Word of God. The armies of
heaven were following Him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen,
white and clean. Out of His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike
down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the
winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On His robe and on His
thigh He has this name written:ALL: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
