"'I desire compassion, and not sacrifice,' for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Matthew 9:13

A Reflection Before the Service

  • Trouble
    Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble
Trouble been doggin' my stroll since the day I was born

    Worry
    Worry, worry, worry, worry
Worry just will not seem to leave my mind alone!

    Trouble
    Oh, trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble
Feels like every time I get back on my feet
She come around and knock me down again

    Worry
    Oh, worry, worry, worry, worry
Sometimes, I swear, it feels like this worry is my only friend

--  Ray LaMontagne, “Trouble”, track 1  from the

    eponymous 2004 album

Trouble in the city, trouble in the farm
You got your rabbit’s foot, you got your good-luck charm
But they can’t help you none when there’s trouble

    Trouble
    Trouble, trouble, trouble
    Nothin’ but trouble

Trouble in the water, trouble in the air
Go all the way to the other side of the world, you’ll find trouble there
Revolution even ain’t no solution for trouble

    Trouble
    Trouble, trouble, trouble
    Nothin’ but trouble

--  Bob Dylan, “Trouble”, track 9  from the 1981

    album, Shot of Love

The Call to Worship

  • The Good News According to St. Matthew (9.10-13)

And it happened that as He was reclining at the table in the house, behold many tax-gatherers and sinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples. And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, "Why is your Teacher eating with the tax-gatherers and sinners?"

But when He heard this, He said, "It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means, 'I desire compassion, and not sacrifice,' for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
