Psalm 29:8a "The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;"

A Reflection Before the Service

  • Working on a building, a Holy Ghost building
For my Lord, for my Lord
If I was a drunkard I tell you what I'd do
I would quit my drinking and work on that building too
Working on a building, a Holy Ghost building
For my Lord, yeah for my Lord
If I was a liar I tell you what I'd do
I would quit my lying and work on that building too
Working on a building, it's a Holy Ghost building
For my Lord, yeah for my Lord
Working on a building, it's a Holy Ghost building
For my Lord, yeah for my Lord
If I was a singer I tell you what I'd do
I would keep on singing and work on that building too

The very centre and core of the whole Bible is the doctrine of the grace of God—the
grace of God which depends not one whit upon anything that is in man, but is
absolutely undeserved, resistless and sovereign. The theologians of the Church can
be placed in an ascending scale according as they have grasped with less or greater
clearness that one great central doctrine, that doctrine that gives consistency to all
the rest; and Christian experience also depends for its depth and for its power upon
the way in which that blessed doctrine is cherished in the depths of the heart. The
centre of the Bible, and the centre of Christianity, is found in the grace of God; and
the necessary corollary of the grace of God is salvation through faith alone.

The Call to Worship

  • Job 38.1-7; Psalm 29.8

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said, "Who is this that
darkens counsel By words without knowledge? Now gird up your loins like a man,
And I will ask you, and you instruct Me. Where were you when I laid the foundation
of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding, who set its measurements? Since
you know. Or who stretched the line on it? On what were its bases sunk? Or who
laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God
    shouted for joy?

Psalm 29 The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the
wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD makes the deer to calve and strips
the forests bare; and in His temple everything says, "Glory!"
