A Reflection Before the Service

Saint Augustine and the Fathers before him, the Church of England, (Richard) Hooker, and (till of late) all her Learned Sons; many Learned Papists say, and firmly prove, that St Paul in that place speaks of himself.

– Thomas Barlow (1607-91) on the identity of the “wretched man” in Romans CH 7, in The Rise of Moralism by C. Fitzsimons Allison (1966)

What have I done?; Sweet Jesus, what have I done?
Become a thief in the night; Become a dog on the run
And have I fallen so far; And is the hour so late
That nothing remains but the cry of my hate,
The cries in the dark that nobody hears,
Here where I stand at the turning of the years?

Yet why did I allow that man; To touch my soul and teach me love?
He treated me like any other; He gave me his trust
He called me brother; My life he claims for God above
Can such things be?

One word from him and I'd be back; Beneath the lash, upon the rack
Instead he offers me my freedom; I feel my shame inside me like a knife
He told me that I have a soul,; How does he know?
What spirit comes to move my life?; Is there another way to go?

– “Jean Valjean”, “The Prologue: What Have I Done?”, from the 1980 musical, Les Misérables composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel

The Call To Worship

The Thirty-sixth Psalm vv. 5-9

Your lovingkindness, O LORD, extends to the heavens,

Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.

Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;

Your judgments are like a great deep.

O LORD, You preserve man and beast.

How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!

And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.

They drink their fill of the abundance of Your house;

And You give them to drink of the river of Your delights.

For with You is the fountain of life

In Your light we see light.
