Party Gone Out of Bounds
The way Jesus Christ ATE attracted the attention of people and especially the religious
authorities of His day. They questioned His customs (sometimes not washing in the right way or
not observing Sabbath regulations). And in this famous episode, two habits that really bugged
them become a topic for discussion – 1) the company Jesus Christ kept at some of His meals 2
(sometimes He ate with sinful, non-religious type people) and 2) a kind of frivolity or celebratory
tone – He and His disciples seemed to be what no religious person SHOULD be i.e. happy. They
ate and drank and seemed to enjoy it.
In response to these charges, Jesus Christ uses five little examples, like mini-parables to explain
why He eats with sinners and why He and His disciples seem to have fun.
OUT of this controversy one truth is clarified and that is – this Person is unique. There is no
other human being like Him and no leader of a religion or spiritual teacher or philosopher or
prophet is in the same category with Him. And being a unique Person, He calls for a unique
response.
