we see this very familiar text, in light of Jesus Christ’s advent, as a kind of paradigm or ultimate pattern for seeing the whole world (archetype?) … It becomes the key for the code…an interpretive key
for all of life in one beautiful and terrible poem.
C.S. Lewis said, “Joy is the serious business of heaven” – like joy will be our JOB (full-time vocation) in heaven – serious joy: that’s what this passage is about – it’s not fluffy; it’s dense joy, dark-grace, it’s heavy joy. Let’s describe this song in three ways:
1) Astounding
2) Appalling and
3) Alluring
